Tūhura Exhibition – Come and Discover!

Tūhura is Maori for 'discover' and is exactly what the Tūhura Exhibition
is all about!

The South Pacific Art Company invites you to join us from the 17th to the 31st of May in discovering contemporary New Zealand art - without even leaving London!

The country's cultural diversity, isolation and overwhelming beauty has influenced and inspired our artists' work. It is colourful, unconventional, diverse and uniquely recognisable as 'of New Zealand'.

Our artists and their work

We are privileged to have some of New Zealand's best contemporary artists from Anthony Pene, an immensely talented Maori painter to Katie Brown who creates truly elegant organic blown glass sculpture. Some of the work showcases traditional Maori techniques and symbolism in contemporary interpretation and mediums. While other pieces reflect the natural and human history of the country and provide social commentary, even humour!

Where and When

The Tūhura Exhibition is on at Gallery 118, 118 Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, London W11 and will be officially opened with a Maori welcome at an, invitation only, preview on Saturday the 16th of May from 4:00pm.

The exhibition will be open to the public from the 17th to the 31st of May. Entry will be free and all the artwork on display for sale. The gallery will be open on Monday to Saturday from 10:00am to 6:30pm and on Sundays from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

A bit about New Zealand

As an archipelago miles from anywhere, the only way for anything to get there is to float or fly whether they be plant, animal or person. The Maori arrived in the 1300's, Europeans from the 1800's, and in the 20th and 21st centuries New Zealand has become a truly multicultural melting pot!

Each new set of immigrants bought new technologies, but resources were often scarce so people had to be imaginative. Ingenuity or 'kiwi cunning' was a necessity to survive! Although the isolation has made it difficult for people, it has been great for preserving New Zealand's spectacular and inspirational natural beauty for which it is world renowned!
